Ipswich Girls Grammar 2018


The Ipswich Girls Grammar School undertook the four week ‘Innovation & Entrepreneurship’ program on the topic of Environmental Monitoring. Six teams were challenged to develop a new and innovative product or service for environmental monitoring. The program covered key topics on innovation and Entrepreneurship and the application of STEM skills in IOT (Internet of Things) and App Design.

As an introduction to the program, the students explored ‘Design Thinking’ and the importance of customer-centric design when developing a new product or service. The students learnt new techniques to uncover customer needs and explored the emotional drivers in successful marketing.

Once the concept designs had been evaluated, the students set out to rapid prototype their ideas and turn them into tangible outcomes for further validation. STEM tools like 3D Design and 3D Printing were applied to make the conceptual products. STEM Punks’ IOT Explorer Kits were used to teach IOT and how to design and build cloud connected devices. The students also designed an App for remote control and monitoring of their product solutions.

In the final stages of the program, the students learnt how to create a compelling story to sell their product ideas. Skills in Pitch-Deck design and selling techniques were explored and the students prepared for their final presentation in front of a panel of key-stakeholders.

This four week program in ‘Innovation & Entrepreneurship’ gave the students core skills in STEM, Entrepreneurial Thinking, and how to turn ideas into tangible outcomes fast.
