Riverpreneurs Riverpitch: Youth Innovation for Healthy Rivers

Sustainability and STEM in action

The International River Foundation (IRF) has long been recognised as a global leader in championing the health of rivers and waterways. Based in Brisbane, IRF connects local action with global impact by supporting river restoration, sustainable management, and community-led innovation. This year, as part of the 26th International Riversymposium, IRF partnered with STEM Punks Education to launch the inaugural Riverpreneurs Riverpitch Youth Challenge - a unique event designed to empower students to design solutions for river sustainability.

Held on 8 September 2025 at QUT Gardens Point, the event brought together 25 students in teams of two to four. The challenge brief, revealed on the day, asked participants to enter a Minecraft world and tackle real sustainability issues facing rivers, with a particular focus on the Brisbane River. Using Design Thinking and rapid prototyping, the students had just 45 minutes to develop their concepts before pitching them to a panel of four judges from industry and community.

The atmosphere was electric as students combined creativity, collaboration, and technical skills to create innovative digital builds. Their solutions ranged from practical water conservation technologies and community engagement campaigns to future-focused ideas linking Brisbane’s river health to the upcoming Olympic Games. By incorporating Traditional Knowledge and aligning their projects with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), participants ensured their designs addressed both local cultural perspectives and global sustainability frameworks.

Commenting on the event, STEM Punks Co-Founder Fiona Holmstrom said,

“The students came up with incredible solutions that showed real imagination and practical thinking. It’s inspiring to see them tackling some of the world’s biggest sustainability challenges using STEM and 21st Century skills like creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. These young innovators are truly shaping the future of our rivers and communities.”

IRF CEO Jodie Bignall added, “Educating young people about the importance of healthy and resilient rivers is critical for the future of our planet, communities and economies. We were delighted with the students' engagement and impressed by the quality of the innovative solutions they presented. Thanks to the best tools, support and inspiration, this event enabled us to ensure that today's youth had a seat at the table - to be the change they want to see in the world - and to pay it forward for the youth of tomorrow."

The judging panel was impressed by the diversity and depth of the solutions, which demonstrated how digital platforms like Minecraft can be powerful tools for environmental education and problem solving. The winning team received gift vouchers and a unique trophy - a miniature replica of the prestigious Thiess International River Prize trophy, symbolising excellence in river management.

Beyond competition, the event was a powerful learning experience. Students developed future-ready skills including problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and communication. Feedback highlighted not only the fun of using Minecraft but also the impact of learning about river systems and sustainability challenges. One student remarked, “I enjoyed showcasing my group’s idea to the judges,” while another reflected, “I learned that the Brisbane River is such a cultural landmark with a strong history.” Others were surprised to discover how waterways work, why the Brisbane River appears brown, and how time constraints can drive innovation.
For IRF and STEM Punks, the Riverpreneurs Riverpitch Challenge achieved its goal of connecting young people to the vital issue of river health in an engaging and meaningful way. By linking digital tools to real-world sustainability challenges, the program inspired students to think differently about their role in shaping the future of our rivers and communities.

The success of the event highlights the importance of empowering the next generation to be custodians of our waterways. As one student summed up simply: “I loved making innovative concepts and presenting them in Minecraft.” With that spirit of innovation and collaboration, the future of our rivers is in safe hands.
